WebSphere MQ for z/OS delivers Universal Messaging for z/OS on System z servers with simple, rapid, reliable, and secure messaging between applications, and extending to web services and files. It also delivers Java™ Message Service (JMS), and publish and subscribe capabilities.

WebSphere MQ for z/OS is the market-leading family of message-oriented middleware products. Product companies rely on it as a proven messaging backbone for almost 10,000 organizations of different sizes, spanning many industries around the world.

In June 2008, WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.0 delivered significant enhancements to service-oriented architecture (SOA) messaging, including JMS ease-of-use and performance, new publish-subscribe support, new message queue interface (MQI) capabilities, and HTTP bridging for Web 2.0 applications.

In August 2009, Version 7.0.1 was further enhanced with more features that can help relieve resource constraints, reduce total cost of ownership, and enable better use of existing investments.

WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.1 now offers additional features to lower the cost of ownership, improve the integration with other critical solutions on z/OS and other operating environments. In addition, this release delivers key features to exploit the System z platform.

To obtain the enhancements in this modification:

  • If you are currently using WebSphere MQ for z/OS V6.0, you can migrate directly to WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.1 without migrating to V7.0.1 first.
  • If you are currently using WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.0.0, you can migrate directly to WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.1, without migrating to WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.0.1 first.
  • If you are currently using WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.0.1, you can migrate directly to WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.1.
  • If you order WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.1, you will receive V7.1 product media following general availability.

WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.1 queue managers and clients interoperate with queue managers and clients from any previous level of WebSphere MQ and MQSeries® products. You may need to upgrade previous queue managers, clients, or both to take advantage of new features in Version 7.1.

Version 7.1 further enhances Version 7.0 and Version 7.0.1 with new features that can help reduce total cost of ownership, and enable better use of existing investments in software and hardware.

Shared Message Data Sets (SMDS)

WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.1 extends the availability and opportunity for removing affinities between applications and queue managers to new classes of MQ applications. SMDS are an alternative to DB2® BLOB tables for storing messages on shared queues.

Messages payload is offloaded to SMDS at message queue PUT (MQPUT) time and retrieved as required by MQGET.

SMDS offloaded messages can be accessed with faster response time and reduced cpu than those offloaded to DB2 BLOBs. Additionally, phased offload rules allow smaller messages to be offloaded to SMDS as Coupling Facility utilization increases, which reduces the required size of Coupling Facility storage to support a given volume of messages. The net effect is a reduction in costs for supporting shared queue messaging, allowing shared queues to be used for new applications where previously the costs were prohibitive.

Further integration with IMS

WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.1 integrates more tightly with IMS Open Transaction Manager Access (OTMA) to provide higher availability to applications. IMS OTMA can detect a message flood situation and indicate this state to WebSphere MQ for z/OS IMS bridge processes which will throttle the rate at which messages are passed to IMS.

One benefit of such throttling is that the queueing of work is performed in MQ rather than IMS, reducing the potential for exhaustion of vital ECSA storage. If the MQ bridge queue is defined as a shared queue, then a second benefit of the throttling is that an IMS bridge process from the same shared queue in a different queue manager could process the queued messages via a different IMS.

Further support for IMS transaction expiration is introduced in this release. Remaining MQ expiry time in MQ messages on IMS bridge queues is passed to IMS OTMA. If an IMS dependent region retrieves a message which originates from an MQ bridge queue and expires the message, then depending on MQ report options, an MQ expiry report can be generated. This leads to application simplification because any expiration, whether in MQ or IMS can be handled by the application in the same manner.

Support for CICS

WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.1 extends the availability benefits of queue sharing group units of recovery introduced in Version 7 for extended transactional (XA) clients to CICS applications. CICS Transaction Server (CICS TS) V4.2 introduces a new GROUPRESYNC option to the RESYNCMEMBER attribute of an MQCONN definition which provides enhanced functionality in a queue sharing group containing MQ for z/OS V7.1 queue managers.

When CICS is configured with this MQCONN attribute, indoubt units of recovery between CICS and MQ can be resolved when CICS reconnects to any eligible MQ in the queue sharing group. This removes an affinity between CICS regions and queue managers simplifying system configuration and enhancing availability.

Toleration for Coupling Facility connectivity l=Loss

WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.1 enhances queue sharing group availability by tolerating a Coupling Facility connection failure. z/OS system managed rebuild facilities are exploited to automatically rebuild a CF structure after such a failure, in a Coupling Facility with better connectivity in the Sysplex.

Additionally, existing Coupling Facility recovery facilities are enhanced with an automatic recovery capability. In the unlikely event of Coupling Facility outage, the queue manager is able to continue processing private queues, and shared queue application down time is limited to the time required to rebuild or automatically recover MQ CF structures.

Reduced complexity for enabling and checking system security

The importance of the effectiveness of the security applied to the connections between applications is matched by the need to ensure this security can be efficiently applied and maintained. Previous versions of WebSphere MQ enabled customers to write their own security exits to manage the authentication of channels. This allowed for effective, if complex security control of channel access, but would obviously require customers to write and maintain these exits.

In this release these security exits are now replaced by IBM provided code, enabling wide-ranging control of multiple security aspects of access to channels, including:

  • Blocking IP addresses
  • Mapping channel access against credentials
  • Rules-based SSL peer mapping

These security controls are also enabled for use with a new security wizard, which runs on Linux™ and Windows™ but provides the control for all platforms of WebSphere MQ V7.1.

As a further security enhancement, SSL providers can now use algorithms compliant with FIPS 140-2 certification, helping to meet stricter regulations for encryption.

The WebSphere MQ family offers the universal messaging backbone for connectivity across all environments, including applications, services and SOA infrastructures.   • WebSphere MQ File Transfer Edition adds file-specific features to the proven WebSphere MQ transport. It delivers a managed file transfer solution that enables the movement of files between IT systems with reliability and without the need for programming.
  • WebSphere MQ Advanced Message Security expands the industry-standard security offered by WebSphere MQ for z/OS with end-to-end, data protection for customers' applications. It enables enterprise-wide, remote management of security polices on their MQ network and can be deployed to existing production environments without changes to existing WebSphere MQ applications.
  • WebSphere MQ Low Latency Messaging (on Linux, Microsoft™ Windows, and Solaris platforms) extends the WebSphere MQ product family with low-latency, high-throughput delivery. It is optimized for the high-volume, low-latency requirements typical of financial markets firms and other industries where speed of data delivery is paramount.

The WebSphere portfolio provides additional connectivity capabilities that can build on, and take advantage of, the SOA Messaging provided by WebSphere MQ:

  • WebSphere Service Registry and Repository provides an SOA Repository that can help publish, find, enrich, manage, and govern services and policies in your SOA. Using the MQ Service Definition, WebSphere Service Registry and Repository can now be used to govern the lifecycle of MQ applications and messaging services in the same way as for other SOA services.

XI50 delivers client connectivity into the WebSphere MQ backbone.
  • WebSphere DataPower B2B Appliance XB60 provides purpose-built B2B hardware that supports AS2 and AS3 messaging and trading partner profile management in a high-performance demilitarized zone (DMZ)-ready appliance.
  • WebSphere Adapters deliver generic technology and business application adapters with wizards that quickly and easily service enable legacy applications, ERP, HR, CRM, and supply chain systems.

In addition, the IBM Tivoli® portfolio offers systems management for large-scale WebSphere MQ solutions. IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON® XE for Messaging can help improve the availability and performance of WebSphere MQ solutions. It can identify common problems and automate corrective actions using predefined industry best-practice situations, while monitoring key WebSphere MQ metrics.

IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE for Messaging can help improve management of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) by monitoring availability and capacity using real-time and historical data analysis. Out-of-the box capabilities, such as auto-discovery and monitoring of complex WebSphere MQ environments, can improve IT staff productivity and reduce administration costs.

WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.1 is upwardly compatible with programs written for MQSeries for MVS/ESA V1.2, MQSeries for OS/390® V2.1, MQSeries for OS/390 V5.2, WebSphere MQ for z/OS V5.3.1, WebSphere MQ for z/OS V6.0, WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.0, and WebSphere MQ for z/OS V7.0.1. Regression testing is performed to ensure compatibility.

Planning information

Deprecation warnings

In future releases of WebSphere MQ, it is not expected that further enhancements to the programming interfaces to WebSphere MQ will be applied to the C++ API.

SupportPac MA0F -- WebSphere MQ Application Messaging Interface (AMI) -- is planned for withdrawal.

In a future release of WebSphere MQ, it is expected that the following features of the product will be removed:

  • SNA client connection channels
  • Cipher specs for data encryption which are no longer considered secure
  • Support for the Real Time Transport within JMS and XMS APIs for interaction with WebSphere Event Broker and WebSphere Message Broker at levels prior to V7.0
  • Certain methods in the WebSphere MQ Java interfaces that are currently marked as deprecated
  • Properties of the Java interface configuration that are currently unused, such as those related to Inherited Transactions
  • Connection pooling for the JMS interface, leaving application servers to manage connection pooling on behalf of resource managers such as WebSphere MQ

Current licensees of WebSphere MQ for z/OS will receive this update from IBM Software Delivery and Fulfillment (SDF) automatically. This shipment of release 7.1, is scheduled to be completed by December 9, 2011 -- two weeks after planned availability.

New licensees

Orders for new licenses can be placed now.

Shipment will not occur before the availability date.

Unless a later date is specified, orders entered before the planned availability date will be assigned a schedule date of one week following availability.

Customization options

Select the appropriate feature numbers to customize your order to specify the delivery options desired. These features can be specified on the initial or MES orders.

Example

If publications are not desired for the initial order, specify feature number 3470 to ship media only. For future updates, specify feature number 3480 to ship media updates only. If, in the future, publication updates are required, order an MES to remove feature number 3480; then, the publications will ship with the next release of the program.

Expedite shipments will be processed to receive 72-hour delivery from the time IBM Software Delivery and Fulfillment (SDF) receives the order. SDF will then ship the order via overnight air transportation.

Displayable Softcopy Publications

WebSphere MQ manuals are offered in displayable softcopy form on CD-ROM. All unlicensed manuals are included. The displayable manuals are available as no-charge features.

The Publications Center is a worldwide central repository for IBM product publications and marketing material with a catalog of 70,000 items. Extensive search facilities are provided. Payment options for orders are via credit card (in the US) or customer number for 20 countries. A large number of publications are available online in various file formats, and they can all be downloaded by all countries, free of charge.

Subsequent updates (technical newsletters or revisions between releases) to the publications shipped with the product will be distributed to the user of record for as long as a license for this software remains in effect. A separate publication order or subscription is not needed.

Customized offerings

Product deliverables are shipped only via CBPDO, ServerPac, and SystemPac®.

CBPDO and ServerPac are offered for Internet delivery in countries where ShopzSeries product ordering is available. Internet delivery reduces software delivery time and allows you to install software without the need to handle tapes. For more details on Internet delivery, refer to the ShopzSeries help information at

You choose the delivery method when you order the software. IBM recommends Internet delivery. In addition to Internet and DVD, the supported tape delivery options for CBPDO, ServerPac, SystemPac include:

  • 3592

Most products can be ordered in ServerPac and SystemPac the month following their availability on CBPDO. z/OS can be ordered via all three offerings at general availability. Production of software product orders will begin on the planned general availability date.

  • CBPDO shipments will begin one week after general availability.
  • ServerPac shipments will begin two weeks after general availability
  • SystemPac shipments will begin four weeks after general availability due to additional customization, and data input verification.
