Multiple enhancements for IBM® Power Systems™ hardware are announced:

Two new processor features are available on the Power System E880 (9119-MHE) server:

  • 40-core 4.19 GHz POWER8 processor planar containing four 10-core processor SCMs (#EPBS).
  • Processor feature EPBT, with the same characteristics as feature EPBS, provides capacity backup for IBM PowerHA® for clients to purchase new Power E880 servers, at a very attractive price, for use as highly available/disaster recovery systems for other Power E880 production systems.

Additionally, a new memory feature is now available on the Power System E870 server and the Power System E880 server, which doubles the maximum memory capacity of these servers:

These additional features support the memory announcement:

  • Bundle of eight EM8Y features, 1024 GB 1600 MHz Memory (#EMBA)
  • Memory Activations for feature EMBA (#EMBB)
  • 1,024 Memory Activations for IFL (#EMBC)

Mixing of feature EM8Y with features EM8J, EM8K, EM8L, and EM8M is not supported.

A wrap plug for Fibre Channel adapters is now orderable as an optional feature, providing configuration flexibility and offering consistency.

New 4.19 GHz Power E880 40-core System Node

One to four of the new 40-core 4.19 GHz POWER8 processor planar features (#EPBS) can be installed in the Power System E880 (9119-MHE) server.

Each processor core has 512 KB of L2 cache and 8 MB of L3 cache. There are eight CDIMM slots per processor and a total of thirty-two CDIMM slots per system node.

Each processor feature will deliver a set of four identical processors that populate four sockets in a given system node. All processors in the system node must be identical. Activations are applied per core with a minimum of eight static activations per system. The rest of the cores can use static, mobile, mobile-enabled, or Power Integrated Facility for Linux™ (IFL), remain inactive, or use temporary activations.

This processor feature is not available on upgrades from the Power System 770 or 780 server to the Power System E880 server at this time.

The EPBS processor feature has an IBM i QPRCFEAT value of EPBC.

CBU for PowerHA Extended

Clients with Power E880 servers using the new EPBS processor feature can choose to leverage the Capacity BackUp for PowerHA offering first announced in November 2015. This offering is for clients to purchase new Power E880 servers, at a very attractive price, whose sole purpose will be for use as highly available/disaster recovery systems for other Power E880 production systems.

The Power E880 CBU for PowerHA system can only be purchased by clients that are purchasing or have purchased a Power E880 production system that meets specific configuration requirements. Those Power E880 production system configuration requirements are as follows:

  • The client must have activated a minimum of 75% of the processor cores installed on their production Power E880 system. These processor activations can be any combination of static, mobile-enabled, or mobile processor activations that are ordered as features on that specific server.
  • The client must have activated a minimum of 50% of the installed memory on their production Power E880 system. These memory activations can be any combination of static, mobile-enabled, or mobile memory activations that are ordered as features on that specific server.
  • A minimum of 75% of the installed cores on the system must be licensed with AIX® (Standard or Enterprise Edition) or IBM i.
  • A minimum of 75% of the installed cores on the system must be licensed with PowerHA (Standard or Enterprise Edition).
  • A minimum of 25% of the installed memory on the CBU Power E880 system must be activated.

When the requirements are completed, the client is entitled to order a Capacity Backup for PowerHA Power E880 system. The following configuration rules apply to ordering a CBU Power E880 system:

  • The client can only order a Power E880 CBU system with the same processor frequency as the designated Power E880 production system.
  • The client must purchase eight Static Processor activations on the Power E880 CBU system.
  • A minimum of one license of AIX or IBM i plus one license of PowerHA must be on the Power E880 CBU system.
  • The client will never be able to permanently activate more than eight cores on the Power E880 CBU system. Elastic CoD will be used to temporarily activate additional cores as described in the following paragraph.
  • Feature EB3J must be ordered on every Power E880 CBU system in order to add feature EPBT to the e-configurators.
  • If the client's Power E880 4.19 GHz production system has one or two of feature EPBS, the client is entitled to order one of feature EPBT (No-charge 4.19 GHz, 40-core POWER8 processor).
  • If the client's Power E880 4.19 GHz production system has three or four of feature EPBS, the client is entitled to order two of feature EPBT (No-charge 4.19 GHz, 40-core POWER8 processor).

For every PowerHA license installed on the Power E880 production system exceeding eight, you will receive 365 Elastic CoD processor days and 11,680 Elastic CoD GB days to be used for high availability and disaster recovery purposes only. The Elastic CoD processor and memory days must be turned on immediately with the installation of the Power E880 CBU system and must be left on until all the days are used. The Elastic CoD processor and memory days are renewable for no charge a year after the Power E880 CBU has been installed with proof that the Power E880 production system remains in use and in compliance with the minimum configuration requirements. The Elastic CoD days continue to be renewable as long as the original client that purchased the Power E880 production system remains in production services.

The Capacity Backup for PowerHA Power E880 system must go through a registration process, which includes a contract signed by the client.

Power E870/E880 memory maximum doubled

A new memory feature is now available on the Power E870 server and the Power E880 server:

  • 1024 GB (4 x 256 GB) CDIMMs, 1600 MHz, 4Gb DDR4 DRAM (#EM8Y)

This new memory feature increases the maximum memory to 32 TB in an E880 server with four system nodes installed. The maximum memory in an E870 server with two nodes is increased to 16 TB.

The firmware level required to support memory feature EM8Y is 840.10.

An order with 256 GB DDR4 CDIMMs cannot have any other CDIMM sizes on the order. The system must be populated with only 256 GB CDIMMs. All 32 memory slots must be filled (eight EM8Y features per node). Configuring E870/E880 system nodes with less than 8 TB memory using feature EM8Y DDR4 memory is not announced at this time.

On model upgrades from the Power System MMD (9117-MMD) to the Power System MME/MHE (9119-MME/MHE) clients can convert their POWER7+™ memory into the 1024 GB CDIMM feature (#EM8Y), if wanted. In addition, existing Power System MME/MHE clients can add the 1024 GB CDIMM feature to existing systems. The MES order must yield a system that has a valid memory configuration. All existing DDR3 memory features must be removed to use the new DDR4 memory features. DDR3 to DDR4 memory feature conversions are available to more economically accomplish this.

Refer to the Sales Manual for the Power System E870 (9119-MME) server and E880 (9119-MHE) server for detailed ordering and installation information.

Optical wrap plug

An optical wrap plug for PCIe Fibre Channel adapters is now orderable as an optional feature (#ECW0). Prior to this announcement, earlier PCIe Fibre Channel adapters were shipped with a wrap plug and newer PCIe Fibre Channel adapters were not. Many clients ended up discarding unneeded excess wrap plugs.  Other clients requested a way to acquire wrap plugs.

Power System Fibre Channel adapters will now follow a consistent approach for all PCIe Fibre Channel adapters. No PCIe Fibre Channel adapters will include a wrap plug as part of the Fibre Channel adapter feature number. The feature ECW0 can be ordered in any quantity to provide the number of optical wrap plugs desired. The IBM e-config tool will default one wrap plug per Fibre Channel adapter ordered, but you can change that quantity to whatever is actually needed. Feature ECW0 wrap plugs can be ordered later as an MES order if your needs change.

Wrap plugs are used to run diagnostic tests on an optical port of a Fibre Channel adapter.  It is a good idea to have at least one wrap plug in your data center for this purpose. It’s also recommended that if you have an empty port on a Fibre Channel adapter, that you leave a wrap plug in that port.  As a Power System boots, it usually checks all Fibre Channel ports. The system will spend extra time and do extra error checking on empty Fibre Channel ports. It tries to determine if the Fibre Channel port is really empty or if there is a cabling/connection problem. Messages about the potential problem will be logged. A wrap plug avoids this extra checking and messages on planned empty Fibre Channel ports.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems.
