IBM® Edge Computing places enterprise applications and data workloads closer to the edge of your organization's network to improve data analysis and critical decision-making processes:

  • Edge computing is managed by central IBM Edge hub.
  • Edge devices can communicate back to an edge server.
  • A minimum of 1 GB hardware is required.
  • A maximum of 10,000 devices can be scaled.
  • Applications and intelligent compute are performed at the device level; for example kiosks, video cameras, drones, and manufacturing equipment.

Overview

Top rule

IBM Edge Computing is a distributed computing design that places enterprise applications closer to where your data is created and where critical actions are performed. Managed by a central IBM Edge hub, the edge server is a Kubernetes-based container platform that enables your organization to manage data workloads closer to the edge of its network. The management of these edge workloads is made seamless with IBM Multicloud Manager.

IBM Edge Computing can enable your development teams to:

  • Build an enterprise edge application in less than five minutes
    • Sample service development continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) process
    • Edge Services Catalog (command-line interface (CLI) only)
  • Deploy enterprise edge applications autonomously to edge nodes and devices at massive scale
    • Business, service, and node or device policies for autonomous service placement
    • Security-rich agreement negotiation with edge node or device
    • Dynamic edge node or device resource management
  • Manage enterprise edge applications and services
    • Seamless edge node or device management integration with the IBM Multicloud Manager console
    • Central administration of edge nodes or devices from container-orchestration cloud platforms (for example, IBM Cloud™ Private)
    • Support for minimal IBM Cloud Private footprint on an edge server
    • User interface for managing node or device health and deployment status
    • Model version management for edge nodes or devices

An integral part of IBM Edge Computing, Multicloud Manager enhances its feature set with edge capabilities. It provides edge use cases that enable enterprise solutions to run IBM Cloud Private instances in numerous (10s-1,000s) locations on an IBM Cloud Private model that has a smaller footprint for capacity, with the instances connected and managed through Multicloud Manager.

Description

Top rule

IBM Edge Computing

IBM Edge Computing is a distributed computing paradigm that brings computer data storage closer to the location where it is needed. Computation is largely or completely performed on distributed device nodes. Edge computing pushes applications, data, and computing power (services) away from centralized points to locations closer to the user. The target of edge computing is any application or general function that is required to be closer to the source of the action where distributed systems technology interacts with the physical world by using a Kubernetes-based IBM Cloud Private container platform.

As a leader in hybrid, multicloud solutions, IBM can offer your organization the advantage of these edge cloud services. With containers at the core of IBM Cloud, located in IBM Cloud Private or IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service, your organization gains the capability to connect with and manage resources and devices through the use of Multicloud Manager.

IBM Edge Computing architecture enables dynamic delivery and execution of computation to the most sensible parts of your organization's network.

  • Is faster, with near-instantaneous computation
  • Reduces load on network bandwidth computation
  • Enables automatic updates of solutions, combining continuous integration and continuous delivery into continuous orchestration

IBM Edge Computing technology enables workloads to be deployed and managed out to lightweight edge devices, and to servers and gateways. Workloads created in the cloud (on IBM Cloud Private) can be pushed out and managed directly at the device, at a much larger scale than previously supported by IBM Cloud Private and IBM Multicloud Manager. Visibility and governance combined with extended Multicloud Manager capabilities are available at the lightweight device layer, with a connection back to the IBM Cloud Private server or gateway.

IBM Edge Computing is available on x86 and IBM Power® Systems.

IBM Cloud Private

IBM Cloud Private is an integrated platform for developing and managing containerized applications. This private, integrated environment can be deployed behind firewalls and managed or controlled in flexible options, as the enterprise needs dictate. It is built on open source frameworks such as Cloud Foundry and the container orchestrator Kubernetes, and contains a private image repository, a management console, and monitoring tools and a robust catalog of services. With the choice of either Kubernetes-based or Cloud Foundry-based runtimes, your organization gains the flexibility to choose its cloud application runtimes. It also enables integrations to popular open source and cloud native tools, as well as IBM application middleware and development services.

IBM Cloud Private is designed to address the challenges of enterprises with business-critical applications that have been developed in a monolithic, waterfall approach. While these applications are running in production successfully, their seclusion means that they cannot be used for innovation and modern application needs as required by the business. To help enterprises modernize these applications, IBM Cloud Private provides a dashboard and tools leverage application analytics to provide prescriptive guidance for refactoring these applications to be modular, resilient, and managed efficiently. This opens opportunities for developers to harness the powerful information of business-critical applications and data in modern development models such as microservices and 12-factor applications.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A US Section 508 Accessibility Compliance Report containing details on accessibility compliance can be found on the Product accessibility information website.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
