    Overview

    Manage and integrate e-business applications while leveraging open Java-based technologies and APIs. This Web application server quickly installs, deploys, and manages Java applications. WebSphere Application Server Version 3 expands its platform support now with Red Hat and Caldera Linux and leverages these powerful, reliable, and leading-edge Linux operating platforms.

    WebSphere Application Server, Standard Edition continues its strong reputation as an integral product in the IBM e-business platform and the IBM WebSphere software family.

    Description

    The rich functionality and services in WebSphere Application Server, Standard EditionVersion 3 product is enhanced by leveraging the reliability, performance, and scalability characteristics of Red Hat and Caldera Linux software.

    New Platform Support

    Consistent function and capabilities are provided across all of the platforms supported by WebSphere Application Server, Standard Edition. Version 3 expands the list of platforms with the inclusion of Caldera Linux, adding to a greater comprehensive cross-platform (combined with other platform versions of this product) structure.

    Oracle for Linux is supported as a database option for persistent storage within the runtime environments. IBM Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.1.8 for Linux is used as a Java Virtual Machine base within the runtime environments.

    Version 3 Capabilities

    All functionality found in Version 3 on currently supported platforms and the enhancements to Version 3 for usability and documentation have been preserved and expanded on for the Linux operating platform. An important aspect of WebSphere - core to the foundation services of IBM e-business platform - is its integration capabilities with other leading products for a robust set of application solution offerings.

    For Linux, WebSphere continues to support associated products such as

    • DB2 for Linux

    • Lotus Domino for Linux

    This new release is for the leading-edge Linux operating platform, providing a consistent, cross-platform (combined with other platform versions of this product)e-business application deployment environment with a rich set of application services and implementations of leading-edge Java technologies and APIs.

    The product continues to provide:

    • A rich e-business application deployment environment with a complete set application services for managing and integrating e-business applications including security, clustering, performance, availability, connectivity, and scalability capabilities

    • Improved product integration with the IBM e-business application development environments provided by IBM VisualAge for Java and IBM WebSphere Studio, while maintaining support of open Java standards and other 3rd-party Integrated Development Environments (IDEs)

    • Improved integration with other key application offerings in the IBM e-business platform, like IBM WebSphere Commerce Suite

    • Combined with WebSphere Application Server offerings for other platforms, consistent, cross-platform (combined with other platform versions of this product) support for:

      • Windows

      • Sun Solaris

      • HP-UX

      • AIX/6000

      • OS/400

      • Red Hat Linux

      • Caldera Linux

      • Novell Netware

    • Leading-edge implementations of the most up-to-date Java-based technologies and (APIs)

    • A migration path to a more function-rich WebSphere's Advanced Edition server

    • Inclusion of an Apache-based HTTP Server with enhancements for security and control as well as support for other major Web servers

    • Performance and scaling attributes that support bean-managed and container-managed persistence

    • A rich eXtensible Markup Language (XML) parsing and configuration environment

    • Dynamic language translation of Web pages from English to other languages such as Chinese and German

    This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

    The service end date for this Year 2000 ready product is September 30, 2001.

    This program when downloaded from a website, contains the applicable IBM license agreement, and License Information (LI), if appropriate and will be presented for acceptance at the time of installation of the program. The license and LI will be stored in a directory such as LICENSE.TXT for future reference.

    Security, Auditability and Control

    IBM WebSphere Application Server V3.0, Standard Edition for Linux uses the security and auditability features of the respective operating system.

    The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
