A new Elastic Capacity on Demand (Elastic CoD) offering represents a major step in IBM's strategy to make it easier for you to acquire processor and memory capacity when you need it and only pay for capacity when you use it. You will be able to efficiently discover and purchase Elastic CoD features to meet your needs.

Overview

Top rule

With new Elastic CoD features, you can purchase Elastic CoD processor and memory days that temporarily activate processors and memory in full-day increments. With this new implementation, you can add temporary processor and memory capacity whenever needed in a manner of minutes without any intervention from IBM.

You can configure using e-config and purchase Elastic CoD processor and memory days through PC (Partner Commerce), WTAAS, or iEPR. These Elastic CoD days can be applied to any similar IBM POWER9 or IBM POWER8 technology-based CoD-enabled server that is in your enterprise1. Once the days have been ordered through your IBM Seller or IBM Business Partner, they will be available in Entitled System Support (ESS) for you to provision to select servers and download activation codes in minutes.

These new features offer the following benefits:

  • A quick and convenient way to order Elastic CoD processor and memory days through your IBM Seller or IBM Business Partner and get billed at the end of the month
  • The ability to order in bulk under one order and allocate the processors and memory to multiple systems in the same country
  • Contract registration form is no longer required
  • No need to report usage monthly
  • The ability to order and provision in minutes

With these new Elastic CoD features, system administrators can download Elastic CoD activation codes for a specific number of processor or gigabyte memory days and enter that activation code directly at the Hardware Management Console (HMC) to activate resources. A monitor that resides on the server logs the usage activity and notifies you when you are running low on Elastic CoD processor and memory days, at which time you can provision more or purchase additional days. Before using temporary capacity on your server, install the required firmware service pack.

1 This new Elastic Capacity on Demand (Elastic CoD) offering is available to use for the following IBM Power Systems:

  • 8408-E8E, 8408-44E, and 9040-MR9
  • 9080-MHE, 9080-MME, 9080-M9S, 9119-MHE, and 9119-MME

Description

Top rule

With Elastic CoD, you can temporarily activate and deactivate processor cores and memory to help meet the demands of business peaks. Your purchased capacity is always available online on the Entitled Systems Support website, whenever you need it.

Elastic CoD is now available for purchasing through Virtual Capacity features by IBM Seller or Business Partner. The processor core days and memory days you have purchased will become available to the client for provisioning usually 1-2 days after the shipment confirmation of the order. IBM Business Partner or Seller should inform the client of the plant order number and end-user customer number used in the order to identify the order on their ESS account.

To use your capacity, follow the below procedure.

Steps for client to generate and use Elastic CoD:

  1. Go to the My Entitled Systems Support (ESS) website.
  2. Sign in with your IBMid, go to "My entitled hardware," and then to the "CoD - Generate new Elastic codes" section.
  3. If your IBMid is authorized for the customer number of this order, locate your order under "My orders." Use its plant order number in the list filter.
  4. If your IBMid is not authorized for the customer number of this order, choose "Search for order," select your country, and enter your customer number and the plant order number of this order.
  5. Select the order and a summary of your order content will be presented, including purchased and remaining capacity for each available resource.
  6. Choose one of your Power systems and enter how much elastic capacity should be provisioned for one of the purchased resources.
  7. Accept the terms and conditions and receive your activation codes by clicking "Generate codes" Step 7: Add the activation code(s) using a hardware management console.
  8. If you need to assign capacity for other resources on the same server or assign your capacity to other servers, repeat step 3 onwards.

The server will keep track of the days used for each resource enabled with elastic code.

For more information about the Elastic CoD offering, see the product page on the IBM MarketPlace website, the help section of the Entitled Systems Support website, or contact the Project Office at ECODPROJ@us.ibm.com

For more support on how to order, download, and use these new features, see the Entitled Systems Support (ESS) website. At that website, clients can also view, download, email, generate new Elastic CoD codes, and run a Demo mode to practice how to generate the new eCOD features.

IBM Electronic Services

Top rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.

To learn how Electronic Services can work for you, go to the IBM Electronic Service Agent website.
