Overview

WebSphere Application Server V2.0, Standard Edition adds support for leveraging open Java (TM)-based technologies and places renewed focus on its function-rich servlet engine for deploying and managing Java-based, server-side applications.

WebSphere Application Server V2.0, Standard Edition extends the value and versatility of this Web server with:

  • Additional function and SSL security for the IBM HTTP Server

  • Tivoli-ready modules for the WebSphere Server environment

  • Reduced cost of deploying applications on all WebSphere-compliant platforms with the use and reuse of industry standard tools in an enhanced administration and interface environment

  • Intel and UNIX (R)-based platforms including Windows NT (R), Sun Solaris, and AIX (R) on HTTP servers from IBM, Apache, Microsoft (TM), and Netscape
WebSphere Application Server V2.0, Advanced Edition, supports the Enterprise JavaBean standard and CORBA. Customers who want to migrate their CORBA applications from WebSphere Application Server V1.0 or V1.1 should consider the Advanced Edition. To facilitate the development and testing of applications, a development copy of the Java servlet engine can be downloaded from the Web at:

DESCRIPTION

WebSphere Application Server V2.0, Standard Edition combines the control and portability of server-side business applications with the performance and manageability of Java technologies to offer a comprehensive Java-based Web application platform. Version 2.0 is integral to managing and integrating enterprise-wide applications while leveraging open Java-based technologies and APIs. It enables powerful interaction with enterprise databases and transaction systems.

This Web application server, which deploys and manages Java applications, includes these features:

  • Full Java support across multiple operating platforms

  • Quick and easy installation across popular Web servers

  • Easy-to-use servlet management and control

  • Full support for the latest Java APIs for servlets and session tracking

  • Support for dynamic Web content generation, including use of Java Server Pages (JSP), servlet applications, and Java beans

  • A function-rich IBM HTTP server (based on technology from the Apache HTTP server) with additional SSL-based security and performance features

  • Tivoli-ready modules that can be managed by Tivoli-based tools

  • Enhanced administration with an improved user interface for application deployment and server administration

  • XML Document Structure Services
This product includes software developed by the Apache Group for use in the Apache HTTP server project at: WebSphere Application Server V2.0, Standard Edition with its open and flexible Web application run-time environment encompasses Java-based servers for Java-based applications and components. Version 2.0 includes:
  • Simple installation

  • Better performance than other methods of extending server function, running as an in-process plug-in with Apache, Netscape, Microsoft Internet Information Server, Lotus (R) Domino (TM) Go Webserver, and the HTTP Server

  • Full support for the latest session-tracking APIs

  • A graphical interface for servlet management:
    • Set options for loading local and remote servlets
    • Set initialization parameters
    • Specify servlet aliases
    • Create servlet chains and filters
    • Log servlet messages
  • A "servlet sandbox" feature for greater security when running remotely loaded servlets
