IBM Spectrum Scale™, the cluster file system that provides concurrent access to a single file system or set of file systems from multiple nodes, is available installed on IBM Elastic Storage™ Server to provide additional protocol access methods. The additional protocol access methods enable you to connect the Elastic Storage Server to other systems using industry standard protocols. These protocols include:

  • NFS
  • SMB
  • Object (Swift and S3)

Overview

Top rule

Elastic Storage Server Protocol Nodes, available as part of the Elastic Storage Server (ESS) high-performance storage system, combines Spectrum Scale to provide protocol and file services to end users. ESS Protocol Nodes can be scaled in count and type to meet the needs of a location's protocol access requirements.

Spectrum Scale includes integrated support for NFS, SMB, and Object protocols, in addition to its POSIX NSD interface. This means that clients can create a data lake and access that important data from many different protocols and devices, without having to make replicas of the data to provide that access. An analyst could see that data as a file or an object, or even run MapReduce and Spark analytics on that data, if applicable.

Cutting-edge enterprise clients demand the capability to derive value from both static and real-time big data. To realize this goal, they need a flexible infrastructure capable of high-performance, petabyte scale, and fully automated data management, all running on a shared data infrastructure. Spectrum Scale for ESS provides the ability to re-architect data workflows and provides an enterprise with a common data infrastructure to help manage and derive meaningful business results from the ever-expanding stores of business data. New sources of data, such as streaming data from sensors or textual data from emails and web logs, can be combined with structured data from traditional sources, such as transaction history, to derive new business insights.

Elastic Storage Server delivers petabyte-scale storage building blocks to a Spectrum Scale for ESS environment, providing the capability to store, manage, and deliver modern, internet-scale business insights by giving clients the capability to manage both structured and unstructured data within the same scalable, secure storage environment. Using the scalable Elastic Storage Servers, multiple enterprise-wide analytic workloads can operate with performance and fully automated enterprise manageability on all types of static and dynamic data and structured and unstructured data.

Description

Top rule

Depending upon the workload and the number of clients that need to be supported, IBM® is offering two ESS Protocol Node options:

  • A dual-socket server to support multiple protocols in the same server node or to support SMB (5148-22L)

Each server will support 3,000 SMB connections per server, 4,000 NFS mounts, or 2,000 concurrent Swift object requests.

Recommendation: Order at least two protocol nodes to provide redundancy.

ESS Protocol Node 5148-22L supports a minimum of 128 GB of memory.

The ESS Protocol Nodes can support 10 Gb, 40 Gb, and 100 Gb Ethernet, and 100 Gb EDR InfiniBand, depending on your interconnect needs. Protocol Nodes can also support multiple protocols on the same server, with up to three-adapter capacity per protocol node.

The Spectrum Scale for ESS license for the 5148-based Elastic Storage Servers includes the license support for protocol nodes.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be found on the Product accessibility information website.

IBM Electronic Services

Top rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.

To learn how Electronic Services can work for you, go to the IBM Electronic Service Agent website.
