Description

Top rule

There are a number of new and enhanced capabilities in the MQ V9.0.4 release. Some of these are available in the base MQ offering, and some of these features and enhancements are only available to clients with MQ Advanced entitlement.

MQ Advanced new features and enhancements include:

  • Replicated data queue managers

Many deployments of IBM MQ are critical for the business and are deployed in high availability configurations. IBM MQ ensures recoverability of data by persisting critical data to disk. Highly available queue managers require that data to be available across multiple systems. There are many options of how to do this that mostly involve configuring shared disks that hold persistent messages and logs for use by the production queue manager and an alternate queue manager in the case of failure. However, configuration and management of these shared disk systems can be complex, expensive, and involve multiple teams.

Replicated data queue managers is a new option for configuring high availability deployments of MQ on Linux Red Hat 7.3 and 7.4. Queue managers that use this configuration have the messages and logs written to the local storage, and this storage is automatically, synchronously replicated by the MQ system to two other systems. This provides the safety of two failover systems without the need for shared disks or external high-availability management solutions. In the case of a queue manager or system failure on the first system, the queue manager will automatically start up on a second system, already having access to the local replica of the messages and logs to take over the workload from the point at which the first system failed.

The use of three systems ensures that any failure will not result in a situation where each system mistakes the others as having failed that might cause a queue manager to be incorrectly started across multiple systems.

The connectivity to each queue manager can be assisted by the use of the Floating IP feature that enables an IP address to be associated with a queue manager regardless of the system the queue manager that is active. This results in simpler application configuration as the connectivity follows the active queue manager. All three systems can have different, active queue managers running, with replicas running on the other two systems. Every system must have sufficient available capacity to take on the running of additional queue managers in the event of a failure.

Replicated data queue managers can only be used for MQ deployments with MQ Advanced entitlement. All three systems can have running queue managers as described. All three systems should

    • Have the same capacity for MQ deployment.
    • Be licensed using IBM MQ Advanced entitlements. Another possible licensing configuration is for one system to be licensed with MQ Advanced entitlements, and the other two systems licensed with MQ Advanced High Availability Replica entitlements. If clients take advantage of the High Availability Replica licensing option for two of the systems, then all queue managers that are deployed on the three systems must be replicated data queue managers. If all three systems are licensed with full MQ Advanced licenses, then there is no requirement for all queue managers to be replicated data queue managers.

Replicated data queue managers are only supported on x86-64 hardware that runs on Linux Red Hat 7.3 and 7.4.

With the addition of replicated data queue managers, the existing descriptions to the IBM MQ Idle Standby features are renamed to High Availability Replica features. Clients who use automated high-availability solutions for MQ should ensure they have the appropriate MQ and MQ Advanced entitlement for their production systems and the appropriate High Availability Replica entitlements for their high-availability systems.

  • Blockchain bridge

In MQ V9.0.3, the MQ Advanced for z/OS® Value Unit Edition offering had an exclusive and new ability to connect MQ systems to a Blockchain and to send query messages to the Blockchain and receive responses. With MQ V9.0.4, this Blockchain bridge is now available as part of the Linux MQ Server and MQ Client images, and can now also connect to MQ Advanced queue managers on distributed platforms. In addition to support from a wider set of queue managers, the Blockchain bridge can also make use of local Hyperledger Fabric networks as well as Hyperledger Fabric networks that run on IBM Bluemix®. Additionally, with MQ V9.0.4 the Blockchain bridge can be used to update the ledger and also query the ledger.

  • Managed File Transfer enhancements

Many clients who use the IBM MQ Managed File Transfer capabilities, which are entitled through MQ Advanced, use the File Logger to allow records of the transfers to be captured. There has been a restriction that needed the File Logger process to run on a system where there was a running queue manager to allow connectivity to the co-ordination queue manager. In MQ V9.0.4, for MQ Advanced entitled users, the File Logger now can be deployed on a system without any local queue manager. This allows it to connect remotely to the queue manager. No separate license is needed for the deployment of the File Logger on a system where there is no installed queue manager.

Functions available for both MQ base and MQ Advanced include:

  • Additional support of REST API for administration

Since MQ V9.0.1 was released, a growing amount of administration of MQ is available by using a REST API, in addition to existing MQ script commands (MQSC) and programmable command format (PCF) functions. This provides a more modern alternative that is designed to allow for new web-based applications to offer custom tooling to meet the needs of every user. More capabilities were added to the REST API in each CD release.

In MQ V9.0.4, the REST API function is extended to include some support for Channels and Subscriptions. This enables yet more of the administrative functions of configuration and management to be performed by the REST API. Users of these REST API functions can work with the Channels that are defined on a queue manager, and also to display subscriptions.

With MQ V9.0.4, the REST API capability is extended to earlier versions of MQ. You can use a V9.0.4 installation of MQ to provide the administrative REST API and route the configuration requests to queue managers running on some earlier versions of MQ.

In addition to the MQ administrative functions, the REST API for specific MQ objects is provided. To ensure that clients and vendors can build out comprehensive tools to make use of REST, MQ V9.0.4 adds the ability to run any MQSC command through REST. This allows new tooling to be built by using REST that makes use of a combination of native REST verbs and some calls to MQSC through REST.

  • New REST API for messaging

As more programming becomes reliant on using RESTful APIs, some developers need to use the same approach for sending and receiving message data. In MQ V9.0.4, the initial support for using REST API for some PUT and GET style, point-to-point messaging is available.

  • Proxy support for IBM Cloud Product Insights

Support for IBM Cloud Product Insights was added in MQ V9.0.2 that added the ability for MQ to register queue managers with the cloud-hosted service. It allowed businesses to understand what queue managers were running and at what version. Usage information was also published to show the number of persistent and non-persistent messages being sent and the message sizes. MQ V9.0.4 adds support for that information to be routed to the Cloud Product Insights service through a proxy. This removes the need for MQ systems to connect directly to the hosted service that run in the public cloud.

  • Salesforce bridge

In MQ V9.0.2, it became possible for events in Salesforce to be published into MQ through the deployment of a bridge deployed on a Linux system. This only allowed events from Salesforce to flow into MQ. In MQ V9.0.4, the Salesforce bridge can now publish messages from MQ through the Salesforce bridge into Salesforce.

  • Extended platform support for CD releases

With the availability of MQ V9, the offering was made available in two forms:

  • A Long Term Support Release
  • CD release

Based on expected client acceptance of the more agile, CD option, this release stream was only available for Windows™, Linux, z/OS operating systems and the MQ Appliance. However, based on client feedback, AIX® is added as a CD release from MQ V9.0.4 onwards. All platforms remain available as Long Term Support Releases.

Statement of general direction

Top rule

IBM intends to deliver an MQ offering in an IBM-administered cloud environment. IBM MQ in a cloud environment will help remove typical inhibitors to start MQ projects, such as capital expenditures, hardware availability, and the skills for managing an MQ environment. This will allow users to focus on developing solutions rather than installing, configuring, and managing software.

The cloud offering is intended to be compatible with on-premise MQ offerings. Within the constraints of a cloud environment, users would be able to use the same development tooling for both the cloud and on-premise software. The assets that are generated can be deployed to either environment.

IBM does not intend to deliver any further new versions or releases of IBM MQ for HP-UX. The final version is therefore IBM MQ V9.0 Long Term Support Release, which will continue to be supported until it reaches the End of Support date.

IBM's statements regarding its plans, directions, and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice at IBM's sole discretion. Information regarding potential future products is intended to outline our general product direction and it should not be relied on in making a purchasing decision. The information mentioned regarding potential future products is not a commitment, promise, or legal obligation to deliver any material, code, or functionality. Information about potential future products may not be incorporated into any contract. The development, release, and timing of any future features or functionality described for our products remain at our sole discretion.

Install

Install is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An install is an installed copy of the program on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. Licensee must obtain an entitlement for each install of the program.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip (socket). A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found on the PVU licensing for Distributed Software page. Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage® Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms found on the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules page. If using full capacity licensing, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using virtualization capacity licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules that can be found on the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules page.

* An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Notes

  • Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies. Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.

Processor Value Unit (PVU) sub-capacity licensing

This software product is eligible for sub-capacity licensing. Customers must accept the terms of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (Attachment), and must obtain PVU Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs) for the maximum processor core capacity available to an eligible sub-capacity product when deployed in an eligible virtualization environment. This is also referred to as sub-capacity or virtualization capacity licensing.

Customers must use the IBM License Metric Tool unless they meet the exceptions described in the Attachment.

For information regarding PVU sub-capacity licensing, including terms and IBM License Metric Tool ordering information, go to the Passport Advantage Virtualization Capacity (Sub-capacity) Licensing website.

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support of a program product version or release will be available for a minimum of two years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is in effect.

This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (by telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) also provides you with access to versions, releases, and updates (CD releases, Long Term Support Releases or fixes) of the program. You will be notified, through an announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with six months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

For additional information on the IBM Software Support Lifecycle Policy, see the IBM Software Support Lifecycle Policy website.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support with each program license acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.

While your Software Subscription and Support is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance by telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. Sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions

To be eligible for sub-capacity pricing, the machine on which the eligible products are installed and running must be eligible for sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions. Software pricing, at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, apply when running:

  • AIX 5L™ V5.1, or later, on an IBM System p 690 or equivalent partition-capable operating system and machine.
  • OS/400® V5R1, or later, running on an IBM System i®.
  • Linux running in an LPAR under AIX 5L V5.1, OS/400 V5R1, or in a partition on an equivalent partition-capable operating system and server.

Sub-capacity pricing for eligible products is based on the current program pricing methodology, but the number of processors will be determined based on the sum of processors for all partitions where the program is defined (used). To obtain pricing at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, you are required to:

  • Install and use, when available, IBM's license use management program, which installs with eligible IBM programs.
  • Install available updates to the operating system and eligible products such that license use can be accurately managed.
  • Determine if the use of sub-capacity pricing terms results in a reduced requirement for entitlements; you can reallocate the entitlement difference by distributing entitlements across a larger or different set of systems, or reserve them for future growth. There will be no refunds for these freed up entitlements. Subscription, Software Maintenance and support volumes, and entitlements for existing contracts will continue at the same levels as the acquired licenses.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.

IBM Electronic Services

Top rule

Electronic Service Agent™ and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to organizations that have IBM Systems. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support, all at no additional cost to you.

Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX® V5.3, AIX V6.1, and AIX V7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type smitty esa_main, and select Configure Electronic Service Agent. In addition, ESA now includes a powerful web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. For more information and documentation on how to configure and use Electronic Service Agent, go to the IBM Electronic Support website.

The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for organizations that are Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Benefits

Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent™ tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24 x 7 monitoring and reporting mean human intervention is not required to report errors.

Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to securely transmit either through the internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem to provide organizations a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into an organization's system.

For additional information, go to the IBM Electronic Service Agent website.

More accurate reporting: Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support Center in conjunction with the service request, you are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.

Customized support: Using the IBMid entered during activation, you can view system and support information in the My Systems and Premium Search sections of the IBM Electronic Support page.

My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with your IBMid. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, you are able to see search results that apply specifically to your systems.
