Top rule
Overview
Bottom rule

The IBM MQ Appliance M2001 is a state-of-the-art physical appliance that comes with a preinstalled and optimized version of IBM MQ V9. It enables clients to rapidly deploy, configure, and manage MQ in their data centers, at remote locations, or with business partners. It can reduce some of the overhead that is required to support a high-performance, highly available, reliable, and secure enterprise messaging solution.

The benefits of the IBM MQ Appliance M2001 were described in Software Announcement 216-488, dated November 15, 2016, which included the update of the MQ level to IBM MQ V9.0.1. It also described the additional functional enhancements made available in that Continuous Delivery release.

Since that announcement, IBM has also delivered updates of IBM MQ V9.0.2 and IBM MQ V9.0.3, providing additional capabilities. Enhancements to the IBM MQ Appliance M2001 include both dedicated enhancements specific to the IBM MQ Appliance and enhancements derived from the updates of the underlying MQ version supported. Updates and enhancements in IBM MQ V9.0.2 and IBM MQ V9.0.3 can be found in Software Announcement 217-289, dated June 20, 2017. Not all features and enhancements delivered in MQ software offerings are found on the IBM MQ Appliance at this point.

In the latest update to the IBM MQ Appliance, additional enhancements are delivered beyond the new IBM MQ V9.0.2 and IBM MQ V9.0.3 upgrades. These include:

  • Simplified security administration with High Availability Key Renewal
  • Updates to the REST API supported on the MQ Appliance for monitoring, administration, and management
  • Additional configuration options for the end-to-end encryption functions provided by the MQ Advanced Message Security feature

These updates further extend the Continuous Delivery release for the IBM MQ Appliance. Clients who do not require functional updates and simply want fixes should remain on the IBM MQ V8 release still available for the IBM MQ Appliance M2001, which will now receive only fixes.

Description
Bottom rule

Since its initial availability in March 2015, the IBM MQ Appliance has provided optimized versions of IBM MQ, with specific enhancements that take advantage of delivery and deployment in a physical appliance. There have been multiple updates, delivered as firmware refreshes, which not only delivered fixes to IBM MQ functions and to the IBM MQ Appliance itself, but also included many functional enhancements. These updates have also moved the IBM MQ Appliance to the IBM MQ V9 Continuous Delivery stream.

For details of IBM MQ V9.0.1 on the IBM MQ Appliance, see the Software Announcement 216-488, dated November 15, 2016.

Availability of IBM MQ V9.0.3 for the IBM MQ Appliance

There have been multiple updates that enhance the IBM MQ Appliance delivered in IBM MQ V9.0.2 and now in IBM MQ V9.0.3. Some of these features are specific to the IBM MQ Appliance, and some are delivered by the underlying IBM MQ functions in these releases.

New features and enhancements to the IBM MQ Appliance include:

  • HA Key Renewal: When configuring MQ Appliances in a high availability pair, this latest feature helps ensure the public and private keys can be regenerated and exchanged in accordance with good security practice.
  • AMS Channel interception: This provides some of the benefits of at rest encryption in scenarios where not all application clients can be updated to take full advantage of the AMS end-to-end security feature.

There are also new features available in the underlying MQ software updates. Not all of them are available and supported in the MQ Appliance at this time. The features available include:

  • Updates to the MQ REST API for configuration, administration, and monitoring
  • Support for the enhancements to the MQ Managed File Transfer functions

Descriptions of these features are included in the announcement of IBM MQ for Multiplatforms V9.0.3. See Software Announcement 217-289, dated June 20, 2017.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be found on the IBM Accessibility website.

Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act

IBM MQ Appliance M2001 is capable as of June 20, 2017, when used in accordance with associated IBM documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) can be found on the IBM Accessibility website.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.
