Business strategies are driving applications that are more diverse than ever. Growth and innovation strategies push the need to explore big data, analytics, mobile, cloud, and social. At the same time, funds are not limitless and data management investments must be fast, reliable, affordable, future-proof, and versatile - even multi-purpose. That is why DB2 10.5 with new BLU Acceleration is a game changer for clients looking to accomplish more with less.

Analytics at the speed of thought. DB2's new BLU Acceleration feature is in-memory hybrid column-organized table technology designed to yield faster analytics from data warehousing without the costs or limits of in-memory only systems. It speeds analytics and reporting with a combination of in-memory and column store data retrieval, maximized CPU processing, and data skipping that allows for faster input/output.

Always available transactions. Stuff happens. Keep your business up and running with DB2's pureScale® clustering technology. It helps to ensure your transaction processing is highly available and extremely scalable no matter what life brings. It is designed to avoid both planned and unplanned outages and provide disaster recovery up to thousands of kilometers, which means virtually no costly downtime even with maintenance. Perform maintenance during the week, or add a node during application testing, and users will never know the difference. With high availability disaster recovery, and online fix pack updates as well as application transparency, managing your data just got a whole lot easier.

Future-proof versatility. The addition of mobile and enhancements to NoSQL capabilities allow clients to expand and modernize applications now and ensure IT infrastructure is ready for the future. Expanded Oracle database compatibility continues DB2's legacy of infrastructure flexibility and differentiates DB2 from stack-only vendors' products.

Unprecedented affordability. Unlike in-memory alternatives, DB2 10.5 with new BLU Acceleration uses an in-memory hybrid column-organized table approach. Placing only the most-used data in memory means money is not wasted on RAM for data rarely accessed. Many in-memory analytics accelerators come only as an appliance, forcing you to buy costly hardware you may not need. DB2 with BLU Acceleration offers flexibility to deploy in-memory speed on infrastructure you already have.

Easy choices. Take advantage of fast, reliable, affordable, future-proof capabilities in six easy packages. Access the functionality you need, with no "cherry picking" required. DB2 10.5 editions are tailored for your business needs by features and capacity.

Description
Bottom rule

Whether the business strategy is to increase growth, drive operational results, reduce costs, attract or retain customers, improve IT applications and infrastructure, or create new products, DB2 10.5 with new BLU Acceleration offers features and flexibility uniquely designed to help IT and business executives accomplish more with less.

New and improved capabilities

Analytics at the speed of thought

Increase growth. Attract customers. DB2's new BLU Acceleration feature is in-memory hybrid column-organized table technology that yields faster analytics from data warehousing without the costs or limits of in-memory only systems. It speeds analytics and reporting with a combination of in-memory and column store data retrieval, maximized CPU processing, and data skipping that allows for faster input/output.

Not only does DB2's new BLU Acceleration feature deliver faster insights, it may also drive consistently better warehouse performance, helping you to meet service level agreements and significantly reduce storage costs. It provides the ability to run a multi-terabyte data warehouse on a single server, which helps lower hardware, setup, and administration costs.

DB2's new BLU Acceleration feature is designed to be transparent, which means it can be deployed with a wide variety of data warehouse applications. In addition, enhancements to the Optim™ Query Workload Tuner tool help you to analyze your workload and decide which tables would yield the greatest benefits when converted to BLU Acceleration column-oriented tables. A reporting tool is also included that helps you track the percentage of your user data that resides in BLU Acceleration column-oriented tables.

DB2's new BLU Acceleration is included in DB2 Advanced Enterprise Server Edition, DB2 Advanced Workgroup Server Edition, and DB2 Developer Edition.

Always available transactions

The pureScale clustered database technology now includes support for high availability disaster recovery (HADR). Use HADR to mirror data from your primary pureScale database cluster to a second local or remote standby pureScale cluster. If your entire primary cluster goes offline, the standby cluster is fully synchronized and is designed to take over the load in seconds, minimizing impact to your business.

The pureScale capability also now includes online fix pack update support. Online fix pack update support means that you can apply DB2 10.5 fix packs to individual members running DB2 10.5 in a pureScale cluster without having to take the entire cluster offline. This enhancement allows you to perform fix pack maintenance operations on your pureScale cluster with minimal impact to your users.

pureScale clustered database technology is included in DB2 Advanced Enterprise Server Edition, DB2 Advanced Workgroup Server Edition, and DB2 Developer Edition.

Future-proof versatility

The addition of mobile capabilities allows clients to expand and modernize applications now and ensure IT infrastructure is ready for the future. Enhanced Oracle Database compatibility continues DB2's legacy of infrastructure flexibility and differentiates DB2 from stack-only vendors' products.

DB2 10.5 is mission-critical for mobile. It includes IBM Mobile Database and IBM Mobile Database Sync, a relational database and synchronization solution for managing and using data on mobile and embedded devices. Currently, the most popular mobile platform, Android, is supported. IBM Mobile Database Sync Server synchronizes data between DB2 and IBM Mobile Database running on mobile and embedded devices.

DB2 10.5 is even more versatile than before with enhanced Oracle PL/SQL compatibility.

IBM Mobile Database, IBM Mobile Database Sync, and PL/SQL compatibility are included in all DB2 Editions.

Easy choices

Streamlined packaging

DB2 10.5 for Linux , UNIX , and Windows makes it easier to choose a single edition that includes the capabilities and tools required to meet your organization's data management needs. All of the functionality and tools offered in the prior generation of the DB2 for Linux , UNIX , and Windows and InfoSphere® Warehouse editions and features are now included in the following lineup of six editions and one feature:

This simplified packaging structure makes it easier for you to choose one or two DB2 editions that will fulfill all of your enterprise's data management requirements. For example, DB2 Advanced Enterprise Server Edition and DB2 Advanced Workgroup Server Edition can be deployed in a single-server or multi-server clustered environment and can handle OLTP, warehouse, and mixed workloads. As a result, both the DB2 Advanced Enterprise Server Edition and DB2 Advanced Workgroup Server Edition give you incredible deployment flexibility without having to compromise on functionality or performance.

Other benefits of the simplified DB2 packaging include fewer editions to deploy and administer, easier entitlement tracking, and greater utilization of the functionality included in the DB2 editions that you license. Refer to the Product positioning section for details on what capabilities and tools are included in each DB2 edition.

Hassle-free DB2 edition upgrades

If you already use DB2 for Linux , UNIX , and Windows and would like to upgrade to a more capable edition, select DB2 10.5 for Linux , UNIX , and Windows editions now share a common install image which means moves between those DB2 editions can be achieved with a simple license key update. There is no need to install new DB2 code on these DB2 10.5 edition upgrades. Furthermore, test cycles are reduced because the edition upgrade simply unlocks new capabilities in your existing DB2 installation. This makes it easy to deploy and start taking advantage of the more advanced DB2 editions in your enterprise. The following upgrade paths can all be achieved with a license update. In order to acquire the appropriate trade-up license, trade-up parts corresponding to these paths are available for purchase.

Under the PVU and AUSI charge metrics, you are restricted to 16 processor cores and 128 GB of instance memory while under the per Terabyte charge metric, you are restricted to 4 processor sockets. These restrictions are per physical or, where partitioned, virtual server except in a pureScale or DPF cluster where the restrictions apply to the entire cluster. Under all charge metrics, you are restricted to 15 terabytes of user data per database. Under the Terabyte charge metric, you must also:

  1. Use the database for a data warehouse and run a data warehouse workload. A data warehouse is a subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant collection of data that integrates data from multiple data sources for historical ad hoc data reporting and querying. A data warehouse workload is a workload that typically scans thousands or millions of rows in a single query in order to support the analysis of data in a data warehouse;
  2. Have user data from a single database spread across two or more active data partitions or at least 75% of the user data residing in BLU Acceleration column-organized tables with a majority of the workload accessing the BLU Acceleration column-organized tables;
  3. Not use DB2 for Linux , UNIX , and Windows built-in high availability disaster recovery (HADR) or pureScale capabilities.

IBM DB2 Workgroup Server Edition for Linux , UNIX , and Windows 10.5

DB2 Workgroup Server Edition is suitable for transactional database workloads in a departmental, workgroup, or medium-sized business environment. The edition shares significant functionality with DB2 Enterprise Server Edition but has processor core and memory restrictions described below. DB2 Workgroup Server Edition can be deployed in Linux , UNIX , and Windows server environments. If using multiple virtual servers on a physical server, there is no limit on the cores or memory available to the physical server providing the processor and memory restrictions are observed by the virtual servers running DB2 . This makes DB2 Workgroup Server Edition ideal for consolidating multiple workloads onto a large physical server running DB2 Workgroup Server Edition in multiple virtual servers.

Program charges: DB2 10.5 Workgroup Server Edition is available on a per Limited Use Socket, PVU, or Authorized User Single Install (AUSI) charge metric. Under the AUSI metric you must acquire a minimum of five AUSI licenses per Install. Under all metrics, you are restricted to 16 processor cores and 128 GB of instance memory and 15 terabytes of user data per database. In addition, under the Socket metric, you are also restricted to no more than 4 processor sockets. These restrictions are per physical or, where partitioned, virtual server.

IBM DB2 Express Server Edition for Linux , UNIX , and Windows 10.5

DB2 Express Server Edition is a full-function transactional data server, which provides very attractive entry-level pricing for the small and medium business (SMB) market. It comes with simplified packaging and is easy to transparently install within an application. With DB2 Express Server Edition, it is easy to subsequently upgrade to the other editions of DB2 10.5 since DB2 Express Server Edition includes most of the same features, including security and HADR, as the more scalable editions. DB2 Express Server Edition can be deployed in x64 server environments and is restricted to 8 processor cores and 64 GB of memory per physical or, where partitioned, virtual server. If using multiple virtual servers on a physical server, there is no limit on the cores or memory available to the physical server providing the processor and memory restrictions are observed by the virtual servers running DB2 . This makes DB2 Express Server Edition ideal for consolidating multiple workloads onto a large physical server running DB2 Express Server Edition in multiple virtual servers.

Program charges: DB2 10.5 Express Server Edition is available on a per Authorized User Single Install (AUSI), PVU, Limited Use Virtual Server, or 12-month Fix Term licensing model. If licensed under the AUSI metric, you must acquire a minimum of five AUSI licenses per Install. DB2 Express Server Edition can also be licensed on a yearly Fixed Term License pricing model. Under all charge metrics, you are restricted to 15 terabytes of user data per database.

IBM DB2 Community Edition

IBM DB2 Express-C Edition for Linux and Windows 10.5

DB2 10.5 Express-C is a no-charge, entry-level edition of the DB2 data server for the developer and partner community. It is designed to be up and running in minutes, and easy to use and embed. It includes self-management features, and embodies all of the core capabilities of DB2 for Linux , UNIX , and Windows such as Time Travel Query. One notable difference between DB2 Express-C and the production editions of DB2 for Linux , UNIX , and Windows is that you can't cluster together servers for the purposes of high availability. Solutions developed using DB2 Express-C can be seamlessly deployed using more scalable DB2 editions without modifications to the application code.

Program charges: DB2 10.5 Express-C can be used for development and deployment at no charge. It can be installed on x64-based physical or virtual systems and may use up to a maximum of 2 processor cores and 16 GB of memory with no more than 15 terabytes of user data per database. DB2 Express-C comes with online community-based assistance. Hardware requirements

Minimum hardware requirements:

The hardware requirements of DB2 products may be occasionally updated. To obtain the current information for supported hardware, visit

http://www.ibm.com/software/data/db2/udb/sysreqs.html

Memory requirements: The amount of memory required for the IBM Data Server Runtime client depends on the operating system and the database applications that are running. In most cases, it should be sufficient to use the minimum memory requirements of the operating system as the minimum requirement for running the IBM Data Server Runtime client.

The following table shows the minimum memory in MB that is prerequisite to installation. The actual requirement depends on the applications you intend to run. Additional memory may be required to handle heavy workloads and a large number of concurrent users. The following numbers are for planning purposes only.

DB2 products and components Memory requirement

DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows (all editions) 256 MB
Net Search Extender 256 MB

Disk space requirements: The following table shows the minimum disk space in MB for a typical installation. The actual space required may vary depending on your file system and the components installed. The following numbers are for planning purposes only.

DB2 products and components Memory requirement

DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows (all editions) 450 MB (1)
IBM Data Server Runtime client 100 MB
IBM Data Server Client 256 MB (2)
DB2 Information Center 120 MB (3)
Net Search Extender 50 MB

(1) Does not include any DB2 databases. An empty DB2 database requires 200 MB of disk space.

(2) Includes the JDK.

(3) English only. Other languages may require more disk space.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found at

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html

Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to the web page below). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the Program, except for those servers from which the Program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the Program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/Counting_Software_licenses_using_sp ecific_virtualization_technologies.html

* An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated, or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

Electronic Service Agent™ and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to IBM Systems customers. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support all at no additional cost to you.

Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX 5.3, AIX 6.1, and AIX 7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM , which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type "smitty esa_main", and select "Configure Electronic Service Agent ." In addition, ESA now includes a powerful web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. For more information and documentation on how to configure and use Electronic Service Agent , refer to

http://www.ibm.com/support/electronic

The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled customers to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Benefits

Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the "symptoms," diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24x7 monitoring and reporting mean no more dependence on human intervention or off-hours customer personnel when errors are encountered in the middle of the night.

Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM . The Electronic Service Agent tool securely transmits via either the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem, and can be configured to communicate securely through gateways to provide customers a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into a customer's system. System inventory information is stored in a secure database, which is protected behind IBM firewalls. It is viewable only by the customer and IBM . The customer's business applications or business data is never transmitted to IBM .

More accurate reporting: Since system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support center in conjunction with the service request, customers are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM , problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.

Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, customers can view system and support information in the "My Systems" and "Premium Search" sections of the Electronic Support website at

http://www.ibm.com/support/electronic

My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent . Reports are available for any system associated with the customer's IBM ID. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, customers are able to see search results that apply specifically to their systems.
