Overview
Bottom rule

Elastic Storage Server models GS1S, GS2S, and GS4S are the next generation of Elastic Storage Server technology using flash and offer six times more storage space and up to 30% greater streaming data performance than the current GS offering. Elastic Storage Server is a complete storage solution in a single rack that comprises data servers, storage, and IBM Spectrum Scale for Elastic Storage Server software. It is able to support workloads such as MapReduce Analytics, high-performance compute and analytics, genomics, video, weather, SAP/HANA, and enterprise backup and restore.

IBM ESS with models GS1S, GS2S, and GS4S enables big data storage to expand scale-out deployments with higher density, performance, and a lower cost per terabyte. When combined with IBM Spectrum Scale and IBM Power Servers, this solution delivers superior data protection with rebuild times reduced to a fraction of the time needed with previous systems.

IBM also offers a complete set of support services for clients making the transition to modern storage systems.

The ESS GS1S, GS2S, and GS4S models include the ESS Storage Expansion (2U24) unit. This storage expansion unit is two rack units in height and supports 24 separate 4 TB or 15 TB flash modules. IBM ESS GS1S, GS2S, or GS4S models include one to four storage enclosures to enable clients to start with smaller entry configurations (96 TB raw or 69 TB usable) and deploy nodes as large as 2.1 PB raw capacity. In addition, multiple nodes (building blocks) can be implemented in a single cluster for large, multi-petabyte deployments.

Each ESS Storage Expansion (2U24) enclosure includes:

  • 2U, 19-inch rack-mount enclosure with two AC power supplies (110 to 240 V)
  • Twenty-four flash module storage slots
  • All twenty-four slots will be populated with either 3.84 TB 2.5-inch SAS SSDs or 15.36 TB 2.5-inch SAS SSDs
  • Three separate 12 Gbps SAS ports per enclosure
  • Two ports connected per enclosure to NSD server interface
  • Dual, redundant 800 W power supplies
  • SAS and power cables
  • Rack mount rail kit

Description
Bottom rule

With the growth of mobile, social, and big data, the quantity and variety of data has skyrocketed. ESS Flash Storage has been designed around an increasingly mobile workforce and the data storage requirements of big data and analytics. ESS Flash is designed for big data and analytic workloads that are also evolving and demanding scalability, extremely high levels of availability, and agility in how IT resources are allocated and used. New performance levels bring the advantages of ESS flash storage to a wider variety of applications, including high-performance computing workloads.

Data delivers value only when insights can be extracted and maximum value requires rapid time to insight. ESS GS1S, GS2S, and GS4S models reduce the processing time for big data from weeks to hours. Compared to older technologies, this all-flash solution avoids complexity and scales to optimally extract value from the largest client environments. Rack-scale consolidation of storage enables total cost of ownership (TCO) benefits through IT consolidation and independent growth tailored to application requirements.

ESS Storage for big data

  • Improves TCO over traditional, large-capacity storage systems
  • Enables high-velocity data capture, discovery, and analysis
  • Accelerate transactions and improve application performance
  • Optimize IT investment, reduce hardware footprint, and require fewer servers and fewer database software licenses
  • Delivers high IOPS and low latency ideally suited for streaming media or content delivery networks

Each ESS Storage Expansion (2U24) includes 24 separate 4 TB (MLC) or 15 TB (3D TLC) flash modules in a single enclosure. This system is deployed with IBM Spectrum Scale and IBM Power Servers as part of the IBM Elastic Storage Server.

The following table shows the available ESS models and configurations of this latest enhancement to the Elastic Storage Server family of offerings:

Model name 2U24 drawers 4 TB Flash Modules (Raw capacity) 1 15 TB Flash Modules (Raw capacity) 1 IBM Spectrum Scale for ESS licenses 2
GS1S 1 96 TB 367 TB 24
GS2S 2 192 TB 734 TB 48
GS4S 4 381 TB 1468 TB 94

1 Estimated capacity, actual capacity will vary based on customer configurable options.

2 Per Flash Module license.

Upgrade paths are available to go from GS1S to GS2S and from GS2S to GS4S within the same flash storage capacity.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

Warranty period

IBM ESS comes with three years of hardware support.

IBM ESS 2U24 Storage (machine type 5147) has a one-year warranty and two years of maintenance.

This product is provided with a one-year standard warranty. For your convenience, IBM has provided two additional years of extended warranty services. Consult with your advisors about the appropriate financial treatment for this offering. See your sales representative for other available service options.

To obtain copies of the IBM Statement of Limited Warranty, contact your reseller or IBM. An IBM part or feature installed during the initial installation of an IBM machine is subject to the full warranty period specified by IBM. An IBM part or feature that replaces a previously installed part or feature assumes the remainder of the warranty period for the replaced part or feature. An IBM part or feature added to a machine without replacing a previously installed part or feature is subject to a full warranty. Unless specified otherwise, the warranty period, type of warranty service, and service level of a part or feature are the same as those for the machine in which it is installed.

Warranty service

If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the types of warranty service specified for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone, or electronically through an IBM website. Certain machines contain remote support capabilities for direct problem reporting, remote problem determination, and resolution with IBM. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Following problem determination, if IBM determines on-site service is required, scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call, machine technology and redundancy, and availability of parts. If applicable to your product, parts considered Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) will be provided as part of the machine's standard warranty service.

Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country-specific and location-specific information.

CRU Service

Tier 1 (mandatory) CRU

Installation of Tier 1 CRUs, as specified in this announcement, is your responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged for the installation.

The following parts have been designated as Tier 1 CRUs:

  • Canister
  • Power supplies
  • Drives
  • Power cords
  • SAS cables

CRU and On-site Service

At IBM's discretion, you will receive specified CRU service, or IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well-lit, and suitable for the purpose.

Service level is:

  • 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, next-business-day response. Calls must be received by 5:00 PM local time in order to qualify for next-business-day response.

Warranty service

IBM is now shipping machines with selected non-IBM parts that contain an IBM field replaceable unit (FRU) part number label. These parts are to be serviced during the IBM machine warranty period. IBM is covering the service on these selected non-IBM parts as an accommodation to their customers, and normal warranty service procedures for the IBM machine apply.

Warranty service upgrades

During the warranty period, warranty service upgrades provide an enhanced level of On-site Service for an additional charge. Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed.

IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone or electronically by access to an IBM website.

Maintenance service options

If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the types of maintenance service specified for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone or electronically, via an IBM website. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed. IBM Global Financing

IBM Global Financing offers competitive financing to credit-qualified customers to assist them in acquiring IT solutions. Offerings include financing for IT acquisition, including hardware, software, and services, from both IBM and other manufacturers or vendors. Offerings (for all customer segments: small, medium, and large enterprise), rates, terms, and availability can vary by country. Contact your local IBM Global Financing organization or go to the IBM Global Financing website for more information.

IBM Global Financing offerings are provided through IBM Credit LLC in the United States and other IBM subsidiaries and divisions worldwide to qualified commercial and government customers. Rates are based on a customer's credit rating, financing terms, offering type, equipment type and options, and may vary by country. Other restrictions may apply. Rates and offerings are subject to change, extension, or withdrawal without notice.

Financing solutions from IBM Global Financing can help you stretch your budget and affordably acquire the new product. But beyond the initial acquisition, our end-to-end approach to IT management can also help keep your technologies current, reduce costs, minimize risk, and preserve your ability to make flexible equipment decisions throughout the entire technology lifecycle.
