Software tools description

IBM Rational Team Concert - a collaborative software development environment

IBM Rational Appliance delivers the IBM Rational Team Concert Developer for Workgroups feature.

IBM Rational Team Concert drives software innovation through collaboration, transforming how people, especially those who have project-distributed teams, work together to develop and deliver software in an increasingly rapid manner. IBM Rational Team Concert enables organizations to better manage the flow of people, process and information across the systems and software lifecycles. Based on the Jazz™ platform, IBM Rational Team Concert helps organizations:

  • Meet the specialized needs of skilled practitioners while enabling a real-time flow of information and ideas
  • Improve collaboration across teams and geographies through consistent access to team process, workflow and artifacts
  • Meet compliance requirements through asset traceability and approval workflows
  • Provide the foundation for continuous capability improvement through flexible, rules-based process enforcement, real-time reporting, and integrated best practices

IBM Rational Team Concert provides the latest technology and techniques directly to the environment the user requires. The latest capabilities introduced in IBM Rational Team Concert are designed to provide powerful functionality in a simple and relevant manner to all parts of an organization.

Enhancements made in IBM Rational Team Concert V3.0 include:

  • Change Management enhancements to support enterprise-wide adoption including extended customization and security. This allows teams to implement new work item customizations such as calculated value sets and dependent choice lists. The additional security capabilities enable a collection of work items to have their own access control on Change Management artifacts.
  • Enhanced planning capabilities with support for both agile and formal methods including new risk management, visual task dependencies, roadmap planning and the ability to support "hybrid" approaches to agile methods that incorporate formal project management methods. For example, a customized scrum/agile method with risk management (risks and risk actions).
  • Improved integrations with IBM Rational ClearCase®, IBM Rational ClearQuest®, and IBM Rational Synergy, IBM Rational Change that enable teams to add collaborative capabilities to their existing development tools.
  • Integration of C/C++ and COBOL project builds using make that enable users to view error messages for each source file from individual developer compilers or team builds. Users can open source directly in the editor which will show the line that cause the error.
  • Support for Deployment is now provided for AIX systems. Deployment support allows users to create application packages and deploy them to the target platforms of choice.
  • Support for advanced context aware search to allow users to easily find work items and source code related to a search request. Context aware search is provided as a quick search as well as in context of a work item to allow users to identify areas of the code that may address the task identified.
  • Open Dashboard Collaboration with support for industry standard Open Social gadgets in IBM Rational Team Concert dashboards, enabling glass level, mashup integration. For example, IBM Rational Asset Manager and IBM Rational Team Concert can share dashboard gadgets but now any third-party tool supporting Open Social gadgets can also host or display IBM Rational Team Concert dashboard gadgets.
  • Enhanced Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC) integrations with IBM Rational DOORS® for advanced formal requirements management integration with IBM Rational Team Concert, with support for rich hovers and link traceability.
  • Enhanced IBM Rational Team Concert for Microsoft® Visual Studio IDE Integration: Major enhancements to developer productivity such as support for annotation, visual merge history, process advisor, static analysis integration and pre-built build and unit testing integrations targeted at Microsoft Visual Studio users.
  • Enhanced IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems integrations to offer seamless and productive development environments for Power Systems developers.
  • IBM Rational Team Concert V3.0 includes bundled IBM DB2® 9.7 which offers increased data protection, scalability, and performance. Greater availability is delivered through enhancements such as online, automated database reorganization. In addition, the increased scalability and the ability to leverage the latest in server technology helps deliver increased performance of backup and recovery.
IBM Rational Team Concert helps you gain the cross-organizational visibility and collaboration for success

  • Process automation and guidance: Enforcement of agreed-upon standards can help ensure higher-quality results. Because not all organizations are the same, rules are configurable and can be defined or refined as needed, enabling continuous improvement.
  • In-context collaboration: Through personal customizable views, team members can gain better understanding of project status (news and events, build status, what is being worked on, and changes). Team members can also be made aware of what their teammates are working on and who is online and possibly available for collaboration.
  • Web client: Leveraging AJAX technology, users experience a rich client style of interaction for web access. External stakeholders or occasional users can gain access to data without a rich client.
  • Dashboards and reporting: Cross repository, cross project, project, individual, and team dashboards offer accurate project health information drawn directly from ongoing work, replacing tedious and time-consuming reporting overhead.
IBM Rational Team Concert includes a comprehensive set of integrated

functionality to help teams to effectively deliver software on time and on budget:

  • Integrated planning linked to execution
  • Real-time project status window
  • Single structure for project-related artifacts
  • World-class team on-boarding and off-boarding, including team membership,
  • Sub-teams, and project inheritance
  • Role-based, operational control for flexible definition of process and capabilities
  • Team advisor for defining and refining rules and enabling continuous improvement
  • Process enactment and enforcement
  • In-context collaboration showing team members and work status
  • Customizable project dashboards with support for Open Social standards
  • Real-time reporting and queries

IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems Software

The IBM Rational Appliance provides you with a rich set of development tools from the IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems Software offering for creating and maintaining C/C++ or COBOL applications on IBM Power Systems running AIX.

Depending on which programming language your organization uses, you have the flexibility to choose between:

  • C/C++ Development Tools for AIX feature
  • COBOL Development Tools for AIX feature

These features provide the latest advancements in development tools. Implemented with an Eclipsed-based integrated environment, you can improve developer productivity over traditional text-based and command line tools.

New to these development tool features is a the x86 Linux® client that allows you to run the development tools on Linux. You also continue to have the previous capability to run the development tools on Microsoft Windows®.

New C/C++ Development Tools for AIX and Linux capabilities:

The C/C++ Development Tools for AIX is enhanced with the following capabilities:

  • New remote include hierarchy view that allows users to select a header file and visualize the include hierarchy. New remote managed build for Remote C/C++ projects.
  • Using remote managed build, makefiles are automatically generated by the tools so users do not have to create and maintain them. Users can control the tool chain, build commands, pre-build and post-build commands, and other settings through wizards and project properties.
  • Improved performance for remote indexing.
New COBOL Development Tools for AIX capabilities

The COBOL Development Tools for AIX feature includes many new source editing-related capabilities to improve developer productivity using the development tools when targeting IBM TXSeries®. These capabilities include:

  • Live syntax checking
  • Color tokenizing and syntax checking for embedded CICS®. and SQL statements
  • Content assist for embedded SQL statements
  • Code templates
  • Snippets view support and predefined COBOL source snippets
  • Refactoring tool to select and extract source into a new paragraph
Debug enhancements

The integrated C/C++ debugger for AIX has been enhanced to optionally allow all threads to be suspended when a breakpoint is hit. Previously, only the thread that hit the breakpoint was suspended.

Debug connections between the client and server for AIX can now be transported over an ssh tunnel. This resolves issues in previous releases where debug connections could not be established in certain network configurations, such as those involving network address translation.

The C/C++ development tools and COBOL development tools complement the C/C++ for AIX and COBOL for AIX compilers and IBM Rational Team Concert offerings, providing a comprehensive application development solution spanning compilers, development tools, and Collaborative Application Lifecycle Management.
