For the enterprise, deploying Linux applications is
not enough it has to be able to develop applications
on Linux as well. Until recently, there were no visual
development and teamworking tools for Linux that could
take advantage of the operating system’s reliability,
performance and flexibility.
IBM changed that in late 2001, when it donated its
"Eclipse"
application development workbench for Linux and Windows
to the open source community. By making Eclipse’s source
code available, IBM provided the community with a common
framework and platform that developers can enhance.
This allows software tools to be interoperable with
each other, which can help speed your software development.
WebSphere Studio Workbench is the IBM version of Eclipse,
providing a toolbox and workbench to develop applications
on Linux.
WebSphere
Studio Application Developer is an easy-to-use Java
application development tool, succeeding VisualAge for
Java.
